Abu Simbel was built by Ramses II (played by Yul Brynner opposite Charlton Heston’s Moses) for his wife Nefertari.  Hmm. It just looks like a party where big people sit around stoned and some little people look up their dresses (?!).  Am I missing something?

Seriously: it’s impressive, and even more so at night!

When the decision was made decades ago to construct the Aswan High Dam, the entire temple would have been lost, submerged forever.  In 1960, they mounted a monumental (yes!) effort to move it.  Piece by piece, ton by ton, the entire sandstone temple and its royal occupants were moved up to safe ground.  An amazing story, detailed here.  (Note: it’s almost 9 minutes long, and continues in four additional segments, all on YouTube.)

I can’t find much about Kom Ombo, but here’s a photo.

I’ll bring back more information.  Post-trip note: Still not much to report, but here’s a one-minute YouTube view.
