Petra!

“…a site that ranks with the Pyramids as a surviving wonder of the ancient world.”

Imagine entering a 15-foot-wide gorge, sheer rock towering hundreds of feet above you on both sides.

Imagine walking half a mile in that cold, dark chasm. At times the walls narrow­ to little more than shoulder-width.

Finally, imagine the crevasse opening to reveal a 2100-year-old temple chiseled out of a rose-red rock wall.

There are scores of structures in this Lost City; some as huge as the Treasury (“first sight” pictures above), others as small as niches and tombs.  All were carved directly out of the rockface by the Nabataeans, a people originally from northeast Arabia but who migrated to Petra in 600 BC.
